Susan Davis, owner of Olde American Antiques and American Quilt Blocks, has created a series of original quilt blocks for the 50 states. Some, but not all, of these designs are based on state quilt block patterns inaugurated by the farm magazine Hearth and Home, circa 1907-1912. Readers throughout the country were asked to contribute pieced cloth blocks to represent their state.

The request for submissions of quilt block patterns by Hearth and Home magazine proved to be very successful. Readers submitted quilt block patterns representing their state and pictures of the selected blocks were published in the monthly issues of the magazine until the series was discontinued in 1912. There were a total of 48 state blocks in the early series. Hearth and Home magazine began another series called "Outlying Possessions" that included Alaska and Hawaii. These quilt block patterns were published later before the magazine ceased production in May 1933.

Susan has a background in design and was a member of the Montana Historic Quilt Project in 1987. Susan and her husband, Jack, founded Olde America Antiques in 1988 with a focus on antique postcards and ephemera. This business morphed into a fine art printing company in 1998. Susan always wanted to produce high-quality images on cloth for quilters. The technology for 8-color printing on cloth was only recently developed. Susan and Jack were among the first to produce genuine 8-color giclee prints on cloth.

Susan has created new, original quilt blocks for the 50 states using the 1907-12 patterns of Hearth and Home magazine as a basis, along with her redesigns. Each of these 50 state designs is unique with a distinct color combination, the name and nickname of the state, and a matching border to enhance the overall design. The style of these designs is influenced by the American Arts and Crafts movement.

Olde America Antiques is a pioneer in fine art printing on cloth. We were the first company to produce genuine 8-color giclee prints on cloth. Giclee (zhee-CLAY) is a recently developed printing process that utilizes high resolution digital scanning and new, sophisticated inkjet technology to reproduce detailed, accurate images and artwork. The inks we use in our giclee printers are archival quality, resulting in colors that are brighter and longer lasting than prints made by traditional printing methods.
